Have you ever thought about how much women are portrayed in the shows? In the 1980s the portrayal of women started to increase. In today's society women are taking more and more roles as characters in the many different shows. Women being portrayed on prime time television has been changing the society and the way that people think. Women are looked at their gender identity and "how people do gender following complex rules about acting masculine of feminine, whether at home, school, work, or as a stranger moving though public space" (Kramer). Their identity is made based on the show they are on and that is how people portrayal them.
The show Desperate Housewives is based on how the women are portrayed as the perfect housewives; but not everyone is perfect. It is just the character image that they have to show. They are isolated into their home and being the naughty housewives while their husbands work to support the family. For example on Desperate Housewives Eva Longoria (Gabby) was made into a sexual character that loved getting attention. Gabby used her good looks to get all the attention that she could get. Desperate Housewives shows how the women are all housewives as they are stereotyped by them by being independent, strong, smart, and romantic. Even though the women do not work they are the dominant ones in the family. This show really shows how women are portrayed in prime time television.
